He will begin the newly-created job in February, replacing Colleen Harris who is moving to the Commission For Racial Equality.

Mr Harverson, a former journalist, was with Manchester United for three years as its director of communications.

His new role as a key royal aide will include responsibility for media matters concerning Charles's sons, William and Harry.

"I have enjoyed a wonderful three years at Manchester United and will be very sad to leave Old Trafford, but I am looking forward hugely to my new job and the challenges ahead," Mr Harverson said.

His career includes working on the Financial Times as a sports reporter and New York correspondent.

Charles's private secretary Sir Michael Peat welcomed him to the Prince's household.

"All of us who have met him have been hugely impressed by his friendly and down to earth approach, and I am sure that he will fit in extremely well."

Mrs Harris was the Prince's press secretary for three years and previously deputy press secretary for two years.
